Over the last few weekends I have been removing the N55 engine in my BMW 335i xDrive E92 coupe! It has been a fun project so far and I thought I'd document it for myself and for anyone that may want to attempt it themselves in the future. To remove the N55 engine from the car can be a daunting task and for good reasons, this is not a quick DIY, but it is a great learning experience.
Before we can even start with removing the engine, we have to make sure that it would be safe to work on and under the car. For this reason I disconnected the battery and put the car on jack stands. got busy with removing the interior air filter and both lower and upper section of housing that hold it in place. I then removed the trailing links with just a couple of bolts and proceeded to remove the intake filter housing, the cowl panel cover and the clean air pipe. Once all of these items were removed, I had easy access to the intake manifold that’s held in by 7 nuts and a screw. It's also important to unplug everything form the ECU and move the wiring loom out of the way. I then removed the serpentine belt, the alternator, and bolts for the AC compressor. As I was working on the car I was removing the coolant and the oil pipes that were in the way.
Next few big items were the catalytic converter that has to be removed or at least loosened in order to access some of the bellhousing bolts. To get the to the cat, I had to remove the engine support as well as the engine mount. BUT before I could do any of that, I had to remove the axles on both sides and cut off the exhaust from the catalytic converter. I tried everything and I could not separate them using normal methods.
The last few steps were to remove the torque converter bolts and the output shaft before separating the transmission from the engine and pulling the engine out of the car. I also put my BMW N55 engine on an engine stand to make it easier to work on.
