MECHANIC'S Guide To Changing Engine Oil & Filters - Mini Excavator Maintenance, John Deere 35G

In this video, you will learn how to change the engine oil and engine oil filter on a John Deere 35G mini excavator. This demonstration uses the 35G, however, there are some similarities when working on other mini excavator makes and models such as a Hyundai, CAT, CASE, Volvo, and Kubota excavator.

First thing to do is remove the oil filter. Some oil will come out, so make sure you have a catch basin ready. Filter pliers work very well when unscrewing filters, however strap wrenches work well, too. When the filter is off, you should check your new filter — whether aftermarket or OEM — to make sure that it is the same. Double check the length, width, seals, and threads to make sure you’re not putting on an incorrect part.

Put a little bit of lubrication, such as the old oil, on the seal to grease it up. Then screw the oil filter on hand tight. Be careful about over-tightening, as you could damage the threads and cause a leak. Now that the oil filter is changed, you can drain the engine oil.

Some models of excavators have a belly pan that needs to be removed. If you can see the oil pan, grab a socket and ratchet and unscrew the drain plug. Make sure your catch basin is in place to catch the engine oil when it starts pouring out. Sometimes you’ll need to pull out the dipstick to let air pressure in.

Once the oil is drained out, make sure you reinstall and tighten the drain plug before pumping in new oil to your excavator. You can now begin pumping in the new engine oil. Periodically check the oil level with the dip stick to make sure you don’t overfill — just like putting new oil in your car. Once you’ve hit the mark, reinsert the dip stick and put on all the caps. Then you can turn on the engine to let the oil filter fill up. Quickly top up your engine oil again now that some of it has drained into the oil filter.

You’ve now successfully replaced the engine oil filter and changed the oil on your mini excavator. Your machine is ready to operate! Clean up and make sure you dispose of all oil and filters properly at your nearest equipment part recycling shop.
