Keith joins us on this rainy day to demonstrate how to change the final drive oil on a mini excavator. This example uses a John Deere 35G, however, many of the steps you’ll see can also be used on other excavator makes and models such as Kubota, Hyundai, CAT, CASE, and Volvo.

Anytime you’re servicing heavy equipment in the rain, it’s very important to make sure that no contaminants are getting into the filters, gear boxes, and tanks. Be very conscious of your work environment and if possible move the machine indoors.

Before changing the final drive oil, line up the plugs vertically by turning the tracks on your mini excavator. The top plug is for filling, the middle is for checking levels, and the bottom is to drain. Have a drain pan to catch the oil coming out. This model of excavator uses allen key plugs. Sometimes there may be dirt built up and you’ll need to clean it out.

Grab a ratchet to crack the plugs loose. Take the top one out first to let any pressure out and then work your way down. If oil comes out of the middle plug, then you’ll know if oil levels are too high, level, or if it’s too low. If there’s not enough oil, it may mean your final drive system is leaking so call a mechanic.

Allow the oil to drain out and then re-insert the lower plug. The fill plug will be right above the check level hole. Sometimes the oil will come out prematurely and give a false reading, so Keith recommends starting up the machine and traveling forward just a little bit so that the fill plug isn’t directly above. Moving the excavator forward a few inches is enough.

Now you can use a 1L or 80/90 container or a pump (if you buy oil in bulk), and begin pumping the new final drive oil into your mini excavator. Once you see the oil start leaking out of the level check plug, you know that you have enough oil in the system. Wipe off the check plug and reinstall it. Finally, reinstall the fill plug and now your excavator is ready to operate.
