How To Improve Arsenal...

► CHECK US OUT ON TWITCH: http://bit.ly/SMDTwitch

Welcome back guys, today we’ll be looking at how Mikel Arteta can improve the current Arsenal side and specifically diving into why the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang have struggled to perform this season for Arsenal

Arsenal had a very encouraging transfer window in a defensive sense. Arsenal sides have been heavily criticized & questioned over the years in regards to their defensive troubles, and those questions have been answered pretty well by Mikel Arteta’s signings and the way his Arsenal side have performed in the FA Cup winning run against some of the top sides in the league.

Arteta has done well since his appointment, stabilising the side and adding more control into Arsenal’s game. Since his appointment only Manchester City, Wolves & Manchester United have conceded fewer goals per game than the Gunners. And this was exactly what they needed when he took over but it’s come at a cost to their attacking output.

Their xG per game is just 1.2 under the Spaniard but even worse is they’re taking, on average, just 9.5 shots per game which is only better than West Brom and Sheffield United, two teams heavily threatened by relegation. The result is that the 2020/21 Premier League season has seen Arsenal score just nine goals from their opening eight games, the worst start to a season in a goalscoring sense since the 98/99 season.

I think the 3-4-3 has done Arsenal well, winning them back to back finals but the extra defender isn’t going to fix their goal scoring problem. This season we’ve seen the wide forwards operating from wider positions more like inverted wingers, being supported by inverted wing backs.

Looking at the skill set of Arsenal’s forwards, they don’t suit receiving the ball wide and creating but instead are more goalscorers who should be used closer to goal where they can get a shot away. Even the wing backs, whilst they can perform an inverted role, are filled with pace and energy so are under-utilised in an inverted role and perhaps would be more suited to traditional, overlapping roles. I think it’s still got use in the bigger games, but right now Arsenal need goals week in week out so I’d like to see a change to the 4-3-3. Using inside forwards and traditional wing backs.

Arsenal need to get Aubameyang firing again. The Gabon forward is without question one of the best goalscorers in the world but this season he’s been a shadow of his former self. He’s scored just once from open play in the Premier League this season and whilst that looks bad on the surface, it gets even worse when you look a little closer.
