The best way Solskjaer can take his side to the next level is by building around Paul Pogba & Bruno Fernandes and using them in the best way to get the most out of their ability. This would require switching his system up from the 4-2-3-1 which limits Pogba’s attacking involvement. It’s not like two world class attacking midfielders can’t play together in the same system. Man City have showed that with Kevin de Bruyne and David Silva playing. Whether the formation rocks to a 4-3-3 or not is irrelevant, but for simplicity we’ll rock the formation. What’s actually important however is the attacking structure and to get the best out of the pair is to get them both higher up the pitch.

With both Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes being closer to goal, the pair will be able to be far more influential on United’s attacking game, slipping the forwards in with through balls, sending in whipped deliveries or simply by getting shots off. The only possible drawback would be playing the wingers, likely Rashford and Greenwood, in wide positions and further from goal when the pair scored 27 league goals last season. However, like we’ve seen with Manchester City, wide wingers rather than inside forwards like at Liverpool, can still be goalscorers, with Raheem Sterling finishing last season as City’s top scorer despite operating from a wide position. And we’ve seen both Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood are able to influence games from wider positions.

The addition of Donny van de Beek could prove huge for Man Utd’s options in midfield. In games where Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side might see more of the ball we could see Pogba, Bruno and Van de Beek playing alongside each other. VDB’s work off the ball and the problems he can cause in the opostions box could be massive in terms of changing a game for Man United, in addition Donny van de Beek’s arrival provides that much needed quality in terms of depth in midfield - we did see last season Paul Pogba being out for a while and towards the end of the Premier League Bruno Fernandes looking tired in games, VDB could be that perfect cover in midfield.
