Today we’re going to be taking a look at How Timo Werner Will Fit into Frank Lampard’s Chelsea, taking a look at the Starting XI, Formation & Tactics.

With Chelsea meeting the release clause in Timo Werner’s contract, the German has signed for the Blues, and alongside fellow new signing, Hakim Ziyech, will give Chelsea some serious firepower moving forward.

Timo Werner has always been a player with a lot of promise, but a single season under Julian Nagelsmann has seen him realise this potential and become one of the most deadly forwards in Europe. The 19/20 season has been Werner’s best of his career in terms of both goals and assists.

Werner is a hugely versatile forward, capable of operating all across the line and up front in both a front two playing with a partner or as a lone striker. However his best performances have largely come off the left, where Werner operates as an inside forward, or through the middle where he’s a pressing forward. Both positions allow Werner to play on the last line and use his tremendous pace to break in behind opposition defences.

For RB Leipzig, he’s largely been given a free role this season and often paired with a target man in Patrik Schick or Yussef Poulsen. What comes of this is Werner will roam across the pitch looking for space whilst the target man stays in a more fixed, central position.
This free role has made Werner not only a much more complete player, but he’s now a more intelligent player too. So whilst he’s free to operate deeper, on either flank or ahead of the target man, he uses his intelligence to determine what’s best for the situation and the side.

Yet despite all these improvements in control and intelligence, Timo Werner is still a very direct and intense footballer. He works exceedingly hard off the ball and often leads the RB Leipzig press. This versatility could be as important for Lampard as Werner’s goalscoring.

So, how will he fit in at Stamford Bridge?

Logically, Werner would slot in on the left hand side. An underrated part of Werner’s game is his ability to carry the ball before getting dangerous shots away. And from the left flank, Werner would be in an ideal starting position to add thrust into Chelsea’s attack. Something that left the Chelsea squad with Eden Hazard.

Both shapes Lampard has used this season, the 4-3-3 and the 3-4-3 can not only accommodate both Abraham and Werner, but it leaves the right attacking slot free for Hakim Ziyech. This trio, on paper, blend perfectly. In Abraham you’ve got a pure goalscorer, Ziyech a creator and Werner who is developing into a goalscorer and creator. Also, they can offer in-game, tactical flexibility and allow Frank Lampard to tweak his system on the fly.

Werner’s arrival now gives Lampard the option to play a pragmatic, counter attacking system filled with pace by adding Pulisic into the mix. Adding Pulisic into the mix and pushing Werner centrally whilst sitting deeper to invite pressure and create space in behind on the counter attack.
