Welcome back! With Manchester United replacing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with interim manager Ralf Rangnick on a 6 month contract, they’re taking big steps forward to implementing a style of play but the question remains: who comes next? If they’re looking to play good football then they should look no further than Erik ten Hag so today I’m going to go through his tactics and take a look at how he could set Man Utd up if was appointed as the next permanent manager.

During his time at Ajax, Erik ten Hag has made the 4-2-3-1 his go to system. In his 3 full seasons in Amsterdam, Ten Hag has had two distinct sides. His 2018/19 Champions League semi-finalists used a more withdrawn number 10 and winger pushed higher, however after this team was dismantled by Europe’s elite Ten Hag evolved. His new Ajax use a standard 4-2-3-1 but the starting shape is the only “standard” thing about them. Like many of the most sought after modern managers, Ten Hag deploys a vertical tiki taka style of play or possession with a purpose. With the ball they build out from the back and Ten Hag prefers capable ball players in these deeper positions. Because of this, Daley Blind has been a mainstay in both of Ten Hag’s Ajax teams.
In attack, Ryan Gravenberch steps up onto the same line as Ten Hag’s number 10, becoming more of a 3-2-2-3. At this point there’s distinctly an attacking unit and a defensive unit that supports the forwards but they’re not disjointed as Ten Hag uses positional play to create overloads for his side. Often this isolates Ajax’s wingers in 1 v 1 situations where they can look to beat their man with a dribble and pick out a teammate. When Ten Hag’s side lose possession they deploy an aggressive counter press, with the players nearest to the ball trying to stop the counter or win the ball back. If they can’t, they drop off into a 4-5-1 defensive structure. Once organised they adopt a man to man pressing scheme with the nearest player pressing the ball and their teammates picking up the nearest passing option, leaving a spare man in central defence.

Despite using a 4-3-3 during his early days at Ajax, Manchester United lack a number 6 to make full use of this shape so expect Ten Hag’s 4-2-3-1. Much of the first eleven would be the same although I expect alterations to his system to work around the natural shortcomings in the current squad. We could see Victor Lindelöf deputise at right back to add Ten Hag’s required ball progression as the Swedish captain tucks in to create a back 3 whilst Luke Shaw operates in an inverted role. This could provide the solid platform necessary for Paul Pogba to link up with Bruno Fernandes in attacking midfield whilst still starting Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo in the forward positions.
