Clients Discouraged? BUILD HOPE (Padesky clinical tip)
When clients become discouraged, therapists want to instill hope. In this clinical tip, Christine Padesky illustrates how therapist responses that express empathy and those that promise action toward meaningful change are both necessary to build client hope. She illustrates why the ideal amount of empathy and action expressed depends on client circumstances and the therapy alliance. Finally, Padesky discusses signposts that therapists are using too much or too little empathy or action in a therapy session.
