Barbados Sheep are the best!!!

It’s another beautiful morning in the Sierra Nevada foothills in Northern California at Lilac Ranch. I will walk you through my morning feeding routine with the Barbados Sheep, and say good morning to a few of the ranch animals.
Barbados Blackbelly sheep are a variety of hair sheep. They have a wool coat, but they shed it each year so they don’t need to be sheered. They are easy to manage and make great grass eaters and farm animals. These sheep are especially good if you happen to have kids around your ranch. They are perhaps 1/3 the size of a more traditional woolen sheep breed so they are much easier to handle and no where near as intimidating to kids. I am particularly happy I don’t need to sheer them. I think our full grown adult sheep may only weigh 50 lbs. I haven’t weighed them, but I’ve picked them up and they’re easier to carry than a bail of hay for sure! They general don’t require any assistance birthing, don’t need their hooves trimmed, and make excellent mothers. If you are raising them for meat, they are excellent meat sheep.
