How to Diagnos an OBD 1 Check Engine Code without a Tool | 1995 4cyl Honda Accord

Have you ever wondered how to diagnose your check engine light when the parts store says they can't attach their digital reader to your car? In this video, I show you how.

In cars 1996 and above, 99% of cars have what's called an OBD 2 connector to read the information from your car's computer. Typically, the Check Engine light codes.

On cars 1995 and earlier, there is no OBD 2 connection. It's an OBD 1 connection. While there is a tool for this, it can be expensive.

Without having to take your car to a shop or the dealer to get this checked, why not just do it yourself?

On a 1995 4cyl Honda Accord, the OBD 1 connector is behind the Glove Compartment. I found it easier to remove the Glove Compartment by unscrewing the 2 screws holding it in. Then the Blue connector is visible and accessible without having to be a contortionist.

In this car, there were two plugs connected side-by-side. One with 3 wires and one with 2. You need the one with 2 wires.

Create a jumper cable and connect the 2 leads. I used some thin speaker wire, about 2 inches long.

Then turn the car to the #2 position. This turns the electricity on and does the diagnostic checks on the dash board. But do not turn the car on all the way.

You'll see the Check Engine light flash in a sequence of Slow and Fast blinks.
If your code is a two digit number, the first number will be a slow blink. The second number will be a series of fast blinks.

Once it cycles through all of the codes, it will begin again.

EXAMPLE:
If the light flashes SLOW once, the first number is "1"
If the light, then, flashes FAST 2 times, the second number is "2"

This means that the error code would be "12"
