How To Disable 48hr Default Mode Setting | A.O. Smith HP10 50H45DV
A.O. Smith HP10 50H45DV Heat Pump water heater has an annoying quirk.
It's default setting is Hybrid Mode. This device is determined to keep you in Heat Pump mode whether it is giving you Hot Water or not.
And during the winter months that's a big "Or Not!"
So this water heater come programmed from the factory to switchback to the Default setting of "Hybrid Mode" after 48 hours.
But when the ambient temperature is under 45ºF the Heat Pump is not supposed to function (So says the manual). But the ambient temperature in my garage was 28ºF and the Heat Pump fan was chugging away. And my water temperature was barely 90ºF.
So I turned it to "Electric mode."
But 48 hours later it returned to Hybrid mode and cooled the water back down.
After weeks of searching and researching for how to disable this annoying default setting, I finally gave up and called the Help line on the front of the User Manual.
The person on the phone knew less than I did. After 20 minutes of nagging her and repeating, "There's got to be a way to turn that setting off," She finally got tired of telling me there was no way and said she would connect me with the on-staff service technician that might be able to go more in depth about the settings.
Within 10 seconds, he said, "Yes. There is indeed a way to disable the default 48 hour setting."
He walked me through this 30 second procedure and my Water Heater has stayed on electric ever since.
In this video, I will show you how to do this.
