JohnLikes2Travel and make a Homemade mask for protection.
Homemade masks are they useful?
I am not an epidemiologist. However I have multiple degrees in statistics, SixSigma, Lean and probability studies. I also hold certifications in industrial hygiene, respirator applications and there use. By far the biggest thing that will slow this virus down is distancing. It will not make it go away but distancing will slow the infection rate.
A physical barrier is also a means to distancing ones self from a virus. Hence protective gear used by medical staff will reduce their infection rate. One piece of their protective gear includes a N95 mask. Those masks can filter 95% of very small (0.3 micron) particles. N95s are capable of filtering out all types of particles, including bacteria and viruses including HCoV-19 (SARS-CoV-2) So a person wearing an N95 mask will have reduced/distanced their exposure to virus potential in Aerosol form by 95% if fitted properly.
Realizing that the public can no longer acquire these N95 masks, some people have opted to use surgical, dust or homemade mask. Their effectiveness will vary greatly. However, every particle of air that is filtered is statistically better than unfiltered. Studies state as follows “Surgical masks provided about twice as much protection as home made masks, the difference a bit more marked among adults. FFP2 N95 masks provided adults with about 50 times as much protection as home made masks, and 25 times as much protection as surgical masks. The increase in protection for children was less marked, about 10 times as much protection by FFP2 versus home-made masks and 6 times as much protection as surgical masks. “ Hence ANY mask will reduce the potential for infection. That is just math.

China studies have shown that even NON N95 masks have a high correlation in preventing the HCoV-19 (SARS-CoV-2) infection in an airborne enclosed environment. Note the ones wearing a mask did not get infected.

China has also reported that due to the highly infectious rate of SAR2 minimal distancing of 6 feet is not enough to prevent the risk of Airborne infections.

Additional, here is the 3/19 report where HCoV-19 was upgraded to (SARS-CoV-2) note the similarities to SARS1 in Aerosol suspension and 3 hour infectious time frame.

So those with masks, any mask will reduce their risk by X amount. The X% efficiency of the mask then dilutes the effectiveness, however as shown in the studies above there are no types of masks that show 0% effectiveness. All reduce a persons risk.
This is not my opinion it is math, distancing one self by physical space or protecting oneself from exposure or to put it another way, reducing the X# of times you are exposed to something reduces your probability of being infected. A mask reduces the amount of unfiltered air you receive of a potential airborne virus. What that protection is worth, versus the cost and effort varies for each person. It is a personal decision.
Now having said this, should everyone panic and shout the sky is falling? Absolutely not. Continue to follow the governments recommendations. This is just information that everyone should use in their daily life to make decisions. A mask is on the LOW end of prevention for the majority of people following the CDC guidelines. If you are not doing the social distancing, cleaning and the rest of the CDC recommendations the mask will have minimal effect. What would I do if I were young person and low risk to infection? I would only wear a mask in an airplane or a bus which should no longer even be an option for travel. What would I wear a mask if I were elderly or sick and have to go out? I would definitely wear a mask, even if I only have a homemade one. X number of times exposed will be reduced by your % of infection in the population.. Thanks for reading this. Stay uninfected till its your time.
