PGS Services video: Plastering & refurbishment works in Clapham North
PGS multi-trade engineer Stuart Jordan begins refurbishment work for a job in Clapham, London.
Stuart starts work in the upstairs bedroom by plastering the walls. The job also involves...
"the hall, stairs and landing to be painted and decorated across all three floors of the property."
The job is scheduled to take 19 days and we follow Stuart as he commences painting the bedroom.
Stuart cuts in the beading along the glass of the French door window frames, to....
"get a nice, crisp clean edge and so we don't get any paint on the glass"
Moving onto the hall, stairs and landing Stuart starts to cove the top part of the landing by cutting the length of coving to size and securing them with a product called easy-fill 45....
"its goes up really quick and it is easy to sand, so it is perfect for the job"
He then simply sticks the coving along to top part of the landing and hallway walls.
While sticking the coving Stuart smoothes in more of the easy-fill 45 as, ...
"these are really old walls and they are not exactly flat so it is quite hard to get perfect joints without filling them, so that is what is needed here"
The coving is finished off by cleaning and washing off any access filler. He moves on by going over all the walls to...
"check for any imperfections and if I see any, i'll just put some filler in there".
With the upstairs ceiling underway Stuart moves on to work on the downstairs ceiling in the hallway and on inspection he found the ceiling had blown.
"It was a lath and plaster ceiling which had come away from the lath and made it really loose and quite dangerous"
The lining paper was the only thing holding up the ceiling so the team took this down completely. They re-tack the ceiling with 12.5mm plaster board and apply a 3mm skim to make it nice and smooth and ready for painting.
To do this Stuart needs to wear stilts in order to get a good coverage on the ceiling. He seals the joints with scrim tape...
"scrim tape bonds all the joints together so they wont crack and you wont be able to see where I've joined the boards".
Stuart flattens the ceiling area off with his trowel and a brush...
"I'm just applying a bit of water and going over the area very lightly with my trowel to smooth the area off.
Stuart is careful not to over use the towel when skimming the ceiling as ...
"It's important to not over use your trowel otherwise when you come to paint it you will need to really sand the ceiling down and the paint wont take to it. There is a fine line to not over doing it as this could ill make more work for the painter."
The ceiling takes 3 trowels so that it is left nice and flat and dries evenly and coving is installed all around the edge.
Stuart then has to paint the ceiling...
"first things first we have to prime the ceiling with 50% water and 50% paint"
Once the base primer is applied Stuart goes back over with paint straight from the can.
On completion, Stuart is pleased with the final refurbishments to the house in Clapham, decorating the hall, stairs and landing, the kitchen and the upstairs bedroom.
"The project ran over by a couple of days due to some extra works added to the job, other than that everything went smoothly our customer is happy and the job is complete!"
