My 6 trips to Guyana were the best of my life. In 1979, I visited Barbados and met a Guyanese of Indian origin who fled Guyana to Barbados in a small boat. I then came to Guyana via Trinidad with some information and was shocked at the conditions when I arrived. But the very next day I met the friendliest, most helpful and interested people I met on all my subsequent trips to other countries in the world. The non-party chinese Chung, first president, ruled for only 1 year. Then Guyana sank into a disastrous dictatorship. It was the first communist-oriented country in South America. The African-born Forbes Burnham ruled and ruined the country. Countless Guyanese emigrated to America and Canada. But the people remain the most hospitable to me to this day despite enormous difficulties at the time. Guyana is about the size of Germany, but had a population of only about 800 thousand and consists almost entirely of jungle. Mainly the coastal region with the capital Georgetown is more densely populated. Incidentally, one of the most dangerous rainforests in the world. And this is where the interesting and adventurous part begins. 60% of the fauna and flora have not yet been explored or named. Insects are probably the greatest danger.
Meine 6 Reisen nach Guyana waren die schönsten meines Lebens. 1979 besuchte ich Barbados und lernte dort einen indischstämmigen Guyanes kennen, der mit einem kleinen Boot aus Guyana nach Barbados flüchtete. Über Trinidad kam ich dann mit einigen Informationen nacch Guyana und war bei meiner Ankunft über die Zustände schockiert. Aber schon am nächsten Tag traf ich auf die freundlichsten , hilsfbereitesten und interessiertesten Menschen die ich auf all meinen nachfolgenden Reisen in andere Länder dieser Welt kennenlernte. Der parteilose chinese chung, erster Präsident, regierte nur noch 1 Jahr. Dann versank Guyana in eine katastrophale Diktatur. Es war das erste kommunistisch ausgerichtete Land Südamerikas. Der afrikanisch stämmige Forbes Burnham regiert und ruiniert das Land. Unzählige Guyanasen emigrierten nach Amerika und Kanada. Aber das Volk bleibt für mich bis heute das gastfreundlichste trotz enormer Schwierigkeiten zu dieser Zeit. Guyana ist etwa so groß wie Deutschland, aber hatte eine Bevölkerung von nur ca. 800 tausend Einwohnern und besteht fast ausschließlich aus Dschungel. Hauptsächlich die Küstenregion mit der Hauptstadt Georgetown ist dichter besiedelt. Übrigens einer der gefährlichsten Regenwälder der Welt. Und da beginnt nun das eigendlich interessante und abenteuerliche. 60% der Fauna und Flora sind noch nicht erforscht oder benannt. Insekten bilden da wohl die größte Gefahr.
