STORYLINE:
Russia and the U.S. are working toward a prisoner exchange that would see each side release nine people, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told journalists Wednesday.

Russian President Vladimir Putin's foreign policy advisor Yuri Ushakov said such an exchange was discussed during Putin's phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump that lasted more than two hours.

Peskov said that it was still too early to discuss a potential date for the swap.

The Kremlin also said that contact between Russia and Ukraine was continuing following direct peace talks in Istanbul last week.

Peskov said that work was underway on several proposals put forward in the Turkish capital, including a prisoner swap that would see each side release 1,000 detainees and a memorandum outlining the framework for “a possible future peace treaty.”

“No one is interested in delaying work on the memorandum between Russia and Ukraine,” Peskov said.

“It is continuing with force," he added.
