GHMC maps 542 km drains under Master Plan 2041 to make Hyderabad flood-free and future-ready..

GHMC’s Big Move: Counting Every Drain to Control Floods...

Just as HMDA prepared a master plan for urban development, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is now working on a comprehensive flood management plan to make the city flood-free. Engineers have started a detailed mapping of the entire drainage network to find a permanent solution to urban flooding.

Every street is being surveyed — noting the direction of drain flow, width and depth of canals, and structural condition. Photos and data are being digitally recorded and geo-tagged. The survey, which began in September, has already covered 542.64 km of drains, revealing that nearly half of the city’s drains were never recorded before.

According to Additional Commissioner Anurag Jayanti, every drain is being geo-fenced from start to end to estimate potential flood levels and design an improved drainage system accordingly.

Under the GHMC Master Plan–2041, officials have so far identified:

Culverts: 201

Catch pits: 5,081

Existing drain length: 1,302 km

Newly mapped drains: 542.64 km

Once the citywide survey is completed, GHMC expects to identify nearly 5,000 km of drains, marking a major step toward a flood-resilient Hyderabad.
