Gending 4 on Field Work, East Java, Indonesia

Located some 15km south-east of Probolinggo in East Java, Gending mill and its 600mm gauge railway were not often visited by railfans. Four small steam locos formed the mainstay of the motive power, necessary to achieve a crushing rate of 1055 tonnes of cane per day. The highlight of the fleet was the diminutive 0-4-4-0T (Orenstein and Koppel 3902 of 1910). Rated at 30 hp, the loco was the last of its class to operate in Java. Although larger plantation Mallets generally had outside frames on the rear engine unit to accommodate a larger firebox, this was not necessary on such a small engine. Later it was donated to Germany and it is now at the Frankfurter Feldbahn Museum. This film was taken by Ross Sadler in 1982.
Originally filmed by Ross Sadler on Super 8 sound, digitized through frame-by-frame transfer and enhanced with Topaz AI.
