Ballet scene from the film, "'The Night Porter" (1974)
I posted this clip from this controversial film in an attempt to learn the name and composer of the music, which consists of two separate pieces.
I first heard the second piece on television almost seven decades ago in the soundtracks of some "B" western films from the 1930's or 1940's. Most of these films were made on low budgets; so, the producers couldn't afford original music. Therefore, they "borrowed" from recordings of public-domain classical compositions.
One minute and 40 seconds into this clip begins some music that was used in some of those low-budget horse operas. It would always accompany an action scene--a fight, or toward the end of the film when the posse was rounded up and chased (and always catching) the bad guys.
Much to my surprise, this music was used in the film "The Night Porter", which was telecast on the Turner Classic Movies (TCM) channel a while ago. Instead of accompanying the good guys, it was played on a phonograph for bad guys; that is, soldiers in a NAZI concentration camp, while a half-naked male ballet dancer performed to it solo! At least since then, because I recorded "The Night Porter" on my DVR, I had a decent recording of the music I've been searching for without the sounds of the hoof beats and the gunshots of the posse.
I am very grateful to two YouTube contributors; namely, Do_re_me J_em_ennui and Ethan Ballard, for furnishing the names of the two pieces and their composer, Christoph Willibald Gluck:
1. Wq. 52: 2 Andante from Gluck's ballet, "Don Juan"
2. Dance of the Furies from "Orfeo and Euridice"
One other thing. the second piece was also used as accompaniment to a TCM airing of a short silent film made in 1913 called "Suspense"; and, I recorded it. However, it was not an orchestral performance. It was probably performed on a synthesizer.
