The London Beer Flood
In 1814 London, a massive beer barrel holding about 160,000 gallons burst at the Meux and Company brewery. A wave of beer, up to 13 feet high, flooded the streets, destroying buildings and causing chaos. Tragically, 9 people lost their lives—some drowned, and one woman died from alcohol poisoning. This unusual disaster remains one of the most serious accidents of its time in the city’s history.
