Picnic on the Blue Ridge Parkway
Today was a North Carolina adventure Saturday for Shelly and I! Shelly recently saw a video about “Moonshine Creek Campground,” shared by our friend, Tammy Parks, in Howe, Oklahoma. The campground is just about 30 minutes southwest of Asheville, so we headed there today, hoping to scout out a possible camping spot this summer.

The campground proved to be closed (until April 1st) and underwhelming, but the area was super cool. Among other things, we discovered a 114 year old Hotel (the “Grand Old Lady Hotel” in Balsam) that is reportedly quite haunted, and I’ve added that to our bucket list for weekend getaways. Sadly, the pandemic was pretty devastating to their business, so I’m not sure it’s actually still open:

After checking out the campground we visited nearby Sylva, which has a vibrant, small downtown, a nice city park the dogs enjoyed, and quite a few breweries.
We met an employee at REI in Asheville who recommended visiting the Pisgah Forest overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway, so that is where we headed next, about an hour away. That drive from Sylva to Brevard, on Highway 276, which primarily follows creeks and the historic path of an old logging railroad, was really spectacular. I can’t wait to go back there in the spring, summer and fall, when there are leaves on the trees. There were quite a bit of ice stalactites on the roadway side cut outs, from water runoff. We saw a few beautiful waterfalls and had a lovely picnic at the overlook at the top of the pass.
This is my first video using the iOS app CapCut, which one of my middle school students taught me about recently in class. It is quite a bit more fast-paced than my “normal” iMovies!
