GSMT - If Frames Could Talk With Suzanne Smeaton, Frame Historian and Consultant

Drawing on over 40-plus years working with major museums and public and private collections, frame historian and consultant Suzanne Smeaton will share a range of stories of specific frames and interesting 'behind the scenes' details regarding their design, how they were selected, who made the choices, how they were removed or repatriated.

Examples include: the quiet, unassuming black frame by a known maker that encloses a Rembrandt portrait; an Italian Renaissance frame that went empty for years and ended up enclosing a masterpiece; the frame that was chosen for John Singer Sargent's Madame X, and how and why it was selected; frames designed by artists for their own artwork; and many more.

A pioneer in the study and scholarship of period frames, Suzanne Smeaton has framed fine art for over four decades. Working extensively in the field of American period frames, Ms. Smeaton has advised both public and private clients; conducted comprehensive frame surveys of public, private, and corporate art collections as well as American frame research projects. She has lectured to museum groups throughout the Country, as well as for Christie's and Sotheby's; researched and written educational videos; presented at numerous symposia; curated and co-curated frame exhibitions at many museums including The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

She has also written articles for numerous publications including The Bulletin of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. For some 27 years, she was employed at the noted frame gallery of Eli Wilner & Company. Suzanne Smeaton is a Certified Member of the Appraiser's Association of America where she is a board member and teacher for the CASP program.
