Trucker protests: MPs debate invocation of Emergencies Act

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau delivered an address in the House of Commons on Thursday on the implementation of the Emergencies Act, ahead of the planned debate by MPs on a motion on the never-before-used emergency powers.

The Act gives the federal government broad powers to clamp down on the “illegal” blockades by so-called "freedom convoy" demonstrators and their vehicles that have paralyzed the nation’s capital.

With the Trudeau Liberals holding a minority, it means they will require at least one other opposition party to vote in favour and also need enough senators in the Senate to approve it as well.

Trudeau has defended the unprecedented move, assuring the House that this act is targeted and the rights and freedoms of Canadians would be respected.

As of Wednesday, the federal government said all cross-border blockades had been resolved through police intervention.
