Global National: Jan. 23, 2024 | Canadian court finds use of Emergencies Act was “unreasonable”
Canada’s federal court has ruled that the Trudeau government’s decision to invoke the Emergencies Act to shut down protests in 2022 was “unreasonable” and unjustified — contradicting a previous public inquiry. The federal government invoked emergency measures to clear Ottawa’s streets after the capital was occupied for nearly a month and blockades were set up at border crossings by so-called “Freedom Convoy” protesters. David Akin explains.
Twenty-four Israeli soldiers were killed in the deadliest day for the military since the Hamas raid that triggered its war on Hamas, military officials said Tuesday. It's a significant setback that could add to mounting calls for a ceasefire. Daniele Hamamdjian reports.
Trump has tightened his grip on the Republican presidential primary nomination, delivering a setback to Nikki Haley in New Hampshire. Haley invested significant time and resources but couldn’t keep Trump from delivering victory in the state. Jackson Proskow has been keeping an eye on the results from Concord, N.H.
Canada is also getting ready for the U.S. election and the possibility of another Trump presidency. Canada-U.S. relations were at the top of the agenda at the Liberal cabinet retreat. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a “Team Canada” approach — tapping key ministers to work with Canada’s ambassador to the U.S. and business leaders to prepare for possible outcomes. Abigail Bimman reports.
A heli-ski trip in British Columbia has turned tragic after a helicopter went down about 50 kilometres northwest of Terrace, B.C. Three people were killed and four were badly injured in the crash. It was one of three helicopters on a backcountry ski trip. Cassidy Mosconi reports on the recovery efforts.
A sombre ceremony in the small community of L’Isle Verte in Eastern Quebec, as it marks the 10th anniversary of a fire that ripped through a senior's residence. Thirty-two people were killed. As Mike Armstrong reports, time has passed but for those who lived through it the memories are still painful.
EDITOR'S NOTE: In our reporting regarding the Emergencies Act ruling, we misidentified justice John Mosley as being named Richard Mosley. We apologize for the error.
