Merry Christmas! And we're going to have a wonderful Brexit New Year!
I hope everyone out there, every single one of you, is having as Merry a Christmas as you can in these trying, pandemic driven times.
And if you don't celebrate Christmas, please have a wonderful day anyway.
So we got our Brexit Christmas present a day early yesterday.
The words of the European Union Chief Brexit Negotiator, Michel Barnier, as the UK and EU announced the breakthrough of a post-Brexit trade deal.
And, as a result, many of us will rest easier as we approach the New Year and the end of the Brexit Implementation Period in the knowledge that the UK has forged that trade deal with the European Union.
In fact, the nation gave out a palpable sigh of relief as the news was released yesterday afternoon.
Now, some will be disappointed. Those that fervently wanted the UK to stay joined at the hip with the EU, as well as the purist Brexiteers who wanted the cleanest of clean breaks.
But from what I've seen so far this could be a Brexit where the only things missing are the proverbial dot from the 'i' and the cross from the 't'.
But we do now have a springboard from which to launch ourselves into our new-found freedoms in 2021 and beyond.
And funny old thing, Brexiteers are now all Remainers - we want to Remain outside of the EU's sphere of influence.
And those who want to reverse the situation are now all Rejoiners.
But that's a question that must wait for at least a generation down the line.
Right now, businesses need to know how the new trade deal will affect them and then get on with what they do best; earning a living.
While the pro-EU types spend the next few months listing all the shortcomings, they can find in this deal - legitimate or not.
But I'm hoping the vast majority of us will quickly move on.
Then we can take this country forward in a positive and constructive mood and build an independent and sovereign nation we can all be proud of.
Now I do have to reiterate that the Brexit deal is not the end of Brexit; it is only the beginning of the end.
There are those in the European Union, and indeed within our own country, who are fervently hoping the UK fails in its quest to become a prosperous nation outside the EU.
And some will go further and actively pursue our nation's demise.
We all know who they are, and from where the threat to our national cohesion is likely to emanate.
And in the year to come, I will be highlighting these threats amongst the other political challenges that the UK now faces.
But today we should think about those who are on duty right now to protect and defend us, uniformed or otherwise, as well as those who are less fortunate than us and those that cannot get to see their loved ones on this special day.
So, with that in mind, please have a great day and may your god give you blessings as you face life's challenges in the year to come.
