A stranger, some branches, and memories

A man came to our driveway and asked for branches that had fallen. My guard was up. I said no. I planned to use them to make a border in the garden. Then I asked why he wanted them. He said to carve. My great uncle carved birds and ducks. 10th Mountain Division. World War II. I still have the birds he carved. I gave the stranger everything. Maybe he’ll make something someone will remember him by someday. And when I see that garden bed without a border I smile. And wonder what he’s making.
