Stop Revit Type Parameters from Breaking Data Exchange

Managing Revit Type Parameters with Engineer Target Values

Let engineers provide the values they know, while BIM modelers handle the Revit type structure behind the scenes.

In this walkthrough, I show a practical Vyssuals workflow for exchanging Revit type-parameter data with engineers without forcing them to understand or manage Revit types.

The example uses door fire ratings. In Revit, fire rating is often a type parameter, which means a simple value change from an engineer may require duplicating or splitting a Revit type. That is a technical BIM modeling task, not something the engineer should have to worry about.

The workflow separates those responsibilities. The BIM modeler creates a temporary instance-based target parameter, copies the current type values into it with a Vyssuals graph, publishes that target parameter through a Channel, and lets the engineer edit simple per-element values in a web table.

Once the engineer marks the changes as ready for review, the BIM modeler brings the proposed target values back into Revit, compares them against the actual type parameter, colors the model by match or mismatch, and adjusts the Revit types until everything is resolved.

What you'll learn:
- Why type parameters create friction in Revit data exchange workflows
- How to separate engineering input from BIM modeling complexity
- How to copy a Revit type parameter into a temporary instance target parameter
- How to publish editable target values through Vyssuals Channels
- How engineers can propose per-element changes without touching Revit
- How to bring Channel changes back into Revit
- How to compare actual values against target values in the Vyssuals graph
- How to color the model based on matched and mismatched values
- How BIM modelers can use the comparison result to split or adjust Revit types correctly

Key workflow steps:
- Create a temporary instance parameter, such as Fire Rating Target
- Copy existing type-parameter values into the target parameter
- Publish the model and editable target values to a Vyssuals Channel
- Let the engineer edit only the target values
- Review and pull the proposed changes back into Vyssuals
- Write the target values back into Revit
- Compare the Revit type value with the target value
- Visualize mismatches in the model
- Resolve the Revit type structure until the model is consistent

The goal is not to remove Revit expertise from the process. The goal is to put the right complexity in the right place: engineers provide domain knowledge, and BIM modelers manage Revit types, standards, and model structure.
