HOPELESS APARTMENT HUNTING!

We are back in business - apartment hunting! For those of you who have been with us for long, you saw us go apartment hunting last year. We moved from the Bronx to Manhattan and thought that we found a place to live for a long time. Unfortunately, we paid double the rent without additional comfort or enjoyment of living. The outbreak killed the vibe to live in New York altogether because it was already difficult to survive here, now all the benefits of NYC shut down: shorter commute was irrelevant and the entertainment in NYC is closed. We decided to weigh our options since our lease is ending soon! We checked Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, but there aren’t in-person showings in NYC.

As a result, we decided to cast our search net a bit wider and tap into the wider New York metro area. One place we made sure to check out was Jersey City, New Jersey, because of the proximity to New York. Although not cheap, it’s a bit cheaper than living in New York, while also retaining the possibility to park the car and having close proximity to the train. We wanted to check out some apartments for rent in neighborhoods we liked, and we will be part of the New York City Exodus 2020, since we are planning to move out of New York.

Some of the apartments we saw were underwhelming. The mold, infestation of roaches and bugs, lack of upkeep - sadly obvious. It made these places difficult for us to envision ourselves living in, even at a discount. We didn’t want to take a step back in comfort and live in a bad environment again because we already dealt with these issues in the Bronx for a long time. Not to mention it was pouring rain so some places were just beyond miserable! We found nothing that we liked in our first run, so much so that we jokingly considered separating and living with our parents instead, it would be much cheaper!

Thankfully, we found the one the second time around. We found a place that checked off all the boxes: proximity to the train, newly renovated, 1 bedroom, safer area, quieter than Manhattan and hopefully parking. We will live in a far smaller building, fewer neighbors/crowding, less intensity and noise. Of course, no place is perfect but we think we found the one that fits our budget and what we’re looking for.
