Number 10. Maria Fassnauer

Maria Fassnauer was the first of six children, born in1879 to a poor couple in Southern Tyrol. She had a normal development until the age of three, when she began to grow at an abnormal rate and eventually shot up to an immense height. Her height at full growth has been estimated to be between 7 foot 2 inches and 7 foot 10 inches which is quite a wide range. This has been attributed to poor measuring methods and the possibility of the human factor of exaggeration.

Whatever her actual height, Maria Fassnauer came to be known as the Giantess of the Tyrol and toured Europe and the United Kingdom as something of a fairground sensation. She usually had high heeled shoes and tall hats on and these helped to somewhat emphasize her height. In fact this dressing style of hers may help explain the wide variation in her stated height!
Maria Fassnauer had to stop travelling due to ill-health and the beginning of the First World War. Sadly, she died of dropsy in December 1917.

Number 9 Ella Ewing

Ella Ewing was born in La Grange, Missouri in 1872. From her birth till about her 7th year, she had a normal growth rate with nothing out of the ordinary. After this, she began to grow rapidly and by her 14th year, she was about 6ft 10 inches, taller than everyone around her.

As a teenager, Ella was traumatised and became adverse to public attention. She was asked to read the Declaration of Independence during the Independence Day celebrations in a neighboring town. While reading, the people sniggered and jeered at her, causing a negative psychological effect on her.
Ella Ewing made it to the Guinness Book of Records when she reached 7ft 4 inches. She kept growing throughout her lifetime and it is estimated that she could have reached 8ft had she not died in 1913.

Number 8 Delores Pullard

Delores Pullard was born on August 13,1946, to parents of normal height (although her mother, at 5 foot 11 inches, was somewhat taller than average). She continued to grow and at the age of nineteen, was billed as being 8 foot 1 although her medically recorded height was said to read 7 feet 5.5 inches. Having a weight of 431 pounds and shoe size of 23, she joined the Walter Wamous sideshow as the ‘Tallest Woman in the World’. She underwent an operation for a pituitary tumour removal which was thought to have been successful. But sadly, complications set in shortly after and she died a week later. She was aged twenty-five at her death.
