The Truth About Eating Disorders: Control, Triggers, and My Earliest Memories
How my eating disorder actually developed — not the myths, not the assumptions, but the lived reality. It wasn’t about food; it was about control, triggers, and the moments that quietly shaped me.
In Episode 5 of The Flavored Word Podcast, I’m diving into the part of my story that people often misunderstand: how my eating disorder actually developed. Not the stereotypes, not the assumptions — the real psychological roots.
I talk about the earliest food memories I can recall, the moments that felt innocent at the time but later became triggers, and the complicated relationship between control, safety, and self-worth. Eating disorders don’t usually start with food. They start with emotion, environment, pressure, and the quiet belief that controlling your body is the only thing you can control.
I also break down some of the biggest misconceptions about eating disorders — including the idea that they’re “made up,” “privileged problems,” or rooted in a single traumatic event. For many of us, the truth is far more layered. My story includes childhood food rituals, family dynamics, diet culture in the '80s, and the slow evolution of behaviors that eventually took over my life.
This episode is part memoir, part myth busting, and part reflection on how we talk about eating disorders, body image, and the psychology behind them. If you’ve ever struggled with disordered eating, loved someone who has, or simply want to understand the why behind these behaviors, this episode offers a candid, unfiltered look at the lived experience.
