Global National: Aug 1, 2020 | COVID-19 creates stigma for Canadian Hutterite communities
As Canada enters the August long weekend, officials are once again warning against gathering in groups as the COVID-19 pandemic stretches on. Some provinces are seeing an uptick in cases, with Saskatchewan reporting 15 new positive cases. Nine of those cases are in Hutterite colonies - small Christian-based communities - and across the Prairies, these communities are making major changes in their day-to-day lives, with residents fighting not only COVID-19, but the associated stigma it's causing.
The majority of deaths in Canada are linked to long-term care homes, and a study out of British Columbia may have uncovered a crucial touchpoint in transmission. Nadia Stewart reports that blood-pressure cuffs have been found to have high risk of being contaminated by the coronavirus.
While there's still no vaccine or cure for COVID-19 yet, potential treatments have been developed at record speeds. Heather Yourex-West reports on the promising drug therapies underway across the country.
South of the Canada-U.S. border, cases and deaths continue to tick upwards, with 25,000 fatalities and nearly two million cases being reported in July alone. There are predictions up to 180,000 people could die from the virus by the end of summer, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. As Jennifer Johnson reports, one of the hardest hit states dealing with a surge in cases - Florida - is also bracing for a hurricane.
As the pandemic left many having to communicate from home, people turned to Zoom and Skype as a way to stay in touch with loved ones, but it's still not the same thing as speaking face-to-face. As Redmond Shannon explains, one British toy designer looked into an inexpensive and safe way to transport yourself into someone else's home.
