Episode 18: Bajau Food At Mataking

Juwita Suwito and Gina Yap Lai Yoong got a taste of Bajau delicacies during their visit to Kudat. But it was on Mataking island that discovered the multiple ways of enjoying cassava (locally known as ubi) — steamed, fried, rolled and wrapped in coconut leaves! They were introduced to each dish by name (e.g. Bianbam, Sianglag, Tompe) along with their traditional methods of preparation. They also found that each Bajau home has a homemade steaming contraption that merges a kettle with a coconut shell!

The gem of their discoveries, however, was a glutinous rice dish known as Oko-oko which is cooked in a sea urchin known as Tehe’-tehe'. Join the girls as they learn more about Bajau cuisine from Chef Eddy at the Mataking Reef Dive Resort, and present a Songs & Stories special accompanied by Tawau-bred musicians JUN and Taufiq Moksin.
