Episode 6: UFO Bee Hoon Asli – Hanya Di Tawau
The Chinese are known for their favourite noodle dish: Wah Tan Hor. It is usually made out of stir-fried flat rice noodles flooded with a starchy eggy sauce. Most of the time, there are choy sum (green vege) and seafood pieces mixed into the sauce to complete a balanced meal. It has become a comfort food favourite for many in Malaysia. In Tawau, the folks gave it a unique twist and it is known as UFO Bee Hoon instead.
UFO Bee Hoon originated from Tawau though it can now be found in different parts of Sabah. The Bee Hoon, which is rice vermicelli, is soaked till it becomes soft. Then it is formed into a disc shape before it goes into hot oil to crisp up. Just before it is removed from the oil, an egg mixture is poured around its border to form a golden ring. When it is lifted up, you get a golden disc ring with omelette edges - it is very unique.
As it looks so much like UFO discs, the locals have named this dish UFO Bee Hoon. It is served with a starchy eggy gravy as well with the choice of mixed seafood, meat, or just vege. When you look at the dish at first glance, you might think, “Eh, why are they serving me omelette drenched in eggy sauce? I ordered Bee Hoon!” Well, dig in, you’ll find the nest of crispy Bee Hoon waiting for you in the golden disc. Nothing beats crispy food in eggy sauce! Bon appetit!
