H.L. Mooney Advanced Water Reclamation Facility

Why Is Wastewater Treatment Important?

Located in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed, the Prince William County Service Authority plays a vital role in source water protection for millions of people living along the East Coast.

The Service Authority accomplishes this by treating up to 24 million gallons of wastewater a day at its award-winning H.L. Mooney Advanced Water Reclamation Facility in Woodbridge. This includes the removal of excess nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus, which can have a negative impact on the diverse ecosystem of the watershed.

Once the wastewater is treated at the Mooney Facility, it’s released into the Neabsco Creek, a tributary of the Potomac River. Eventually, the clean water discharged from the treatment plant flows to the Chesapeake Bay.

We invite you to learn, step-by-step, how the Service Authority helps maintain the health of the watershed both now and for generations to come.
