Syracuse (Italian: Siracusa), in ancient times it was one of the most important points on the map of the known world. Within the limits of today's city many monuments and artifacts from that period have been preserved. Syracuse is located in the south-eastern part of Sicily. Syracuse's natural harbour is closed by the island of Ortygia on one side and the Magdalena peninsula on the other. The city's architecture is an interesting mix of medieval and Gothic with more modern Baroque.
