Today, the Duchess of Cambridge celebrates her 40th birthday and three new photographs have been released to mark the occasion. The portraits, which were taken by Italian fashion photographer Paolo Roversi, show Kate striking a range of poses in three different Alexander McQueen dresses. Kate also took to Twitter to show her appreciation for Mr Roversi for taking “three special portraits” while she also thanked royal supporters for their “very king birthday wishes”. Meanwhile, the Duchess of Cambridge was wished a happy birthday on social media from Buckingham Palace, Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall. Kate married William in 2011 at Westminster Abbey and she has since become a central figure of the Firm. However, things could have been very different for Kate, had it not been for a make–or–break trip to the Seychelles according to Ms Nicholl. The couple met while students at the University of St Andrews and were together for five years before William broke up with a reportedly devastated Kate in 2007. Later that summer, however, they rekindled their love for one another by going on a glamorous trip away. There, William allegedly made a “marriage pact” with his future wife. In her 2010 book, 'William and Harry’, Ms Nicholl claimed: “Under a moon so bright it cast shadows across the beach, William assured Kate she was the one. “For the first time, they discussed quite seriously the subject of marriage. “William, who had inherited something of his father’s fear of commitment, knew he would lose Kate if he could not give her some form of guarantee. “The pact they made would stand them in good stead.” A member of William and Kate’s inner circle told Ms Nicholl: “They didn’t agree to get married there and then; what they made was a pact. “William told Kate she was the one, but he was not ready to get married. “He promised her his commitment and said he would not let her down and she in turn agreed to wait for him.” Before their split, Kate and William’s relationship had seen them jet off to Kenya together on a safari, and go on a romantic ski trip to Klosters. Kate was also invited to Sandringham for the Royal Family’s Christmas lunch. In her updated biography, 'The Making of a Royal Romance’, Ms Nicholl claimed: “I supposed what none of us knew was that (she) and William had actually made a secret pact to be married way back in 2007, after they got together after their second major break–up. “And we know that this is a couple who are very good at keeping secrets. “So really, Kate had the last laugh because she got her prince.” 'William and Harry’ was written by Katie Nicholl and published by Preface Publishing in 2010.
