In an extract from the couple's unauthorised biography, Finding Freedom, the Duke and Duchess were said to be "afraid of the consequences" of speaking out against the monarchy. In the excerpt shared in PEOPLE magazine, authors Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand claimed the couple were afraid of "challenging the system" and had "nerves" about sitting down with Oprah. It implied the interview was a now–or–never moment for the duo, as the grievances being aired could not have happened prior to their stepping down as senior royals. It reads: "There were so many things they were unable to say (before)." The biography, which was published last year but is re–released this month in a paperback edition, chronicles the relationship between the pair. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have made it clear the authors of the book do not speak for them. It spans from their initial dates up to their departure from the UK to pursue a life separate from the Royal Family in the US. In the tell–all Oprah interview which aired in March, Meghan and Harry made controversial claims about their time as senior royals. In addition to "concerns and conversations" which had been raised by a member of the family about what colour Archie's skin would be, the couple also claimed that a rift had arisen between Harry and Prince Charles, with Harry claiming that at one point his father had "stopped taking my calls". Meghan alleged that she had been refused mental health support after voicing she had been suffering with suicidal thoughts while pregnant with her son Archie, now aged two. She also referred to an incident with Kate, Duchess of Cambridge ahead of her 2018 wedding to Prince Harry where she claimed Kate made her cry. After airing, there were unprecedented consequences and tension grew between the Royal Family and the couple. A statement was issued by Buckingham Palace in the aftermath which said the Royal Family was “saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan” and that “while some recollections may vary” the issues were “taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately”. While the Duke and Duchess were not interviewed for the book nor did they contribute, the co–authors said they spoke to the couple "when appropriate". According to the interview for PEOPLE magazine with co–author Omid Scobie that accompanies the extract, the pair feel no regrets about the fallout. He said that the couple are now “in the thrive chapter” and are in a “different place” which is “much healthier”. The co–author also said the pair were returning to public life after "keeping toxicity away", and enjoying parental leave after the birth of their second child Lilibet–Diana in June. In the interview Scobie said: "They're a couple who do very well in those moments of human interaction. They need to be on the ground".
