• Auto-renewal silently failed — Let's Encrypt renewal cron job broke after a server migration. no alerts.
• No cert expiry monitoring — not in Datadog. not in PagerDuty. nobody was watching the 30-day warning.
• Renewal email went to a dead inbox — the cert was registered to a former employee's email. unmonitored for months.
• Prod was down. Slack was up. — team was chatting normally. nobody checks the site on a friday evening.
Lesson: a $0 cron job could have caught this
