Our DNS TTL was 86400. The outage lasted 23 hours.

we updated the A record. the world didn't get the memo. DNS not resolving — old IP still cached across the internet.

• Migrated load balancer to new IP — old LB decommissioned at 2am. clean cutover. textbook.
• Updated the A record in Route53 — dig confirmed new IP locally. monitoring green. went to bed.
• 7am — support tickets explode — 30% of customers still hitting the dead IP. resolvers cached it.
• TTL was 86400. one full day. — no rollback. no flush. just wait. and watch the graphs.

Lesson: 86400 is not a TTL. it's a hostage situation.
