These are my take away when I got my 2nd and 3rd tattoo: ( I wish I did before getting a tattoo)
1. Visualize - I had a hard time looking for the design that I wanted and I ended up with a spontaneous one. Know the location of the tattoo in your body. I suggest areas that can be covered up by pants and t-shirt just to be safe. But it's still up to you.
2. Allocate the budget - Make sure that you have funds before deciding to get a tattoo and as much as possible not to ask for discount or freebies. Lol.
3. Prepare your skin - Avoid drinking alcohol or coffee before getting inked as this thickens thy blood and makes you more susceptible to pain. Do some quick research about your family history in relation to tattoo. Your skin might be too sensitive, just to be safe.
4. It takes a while - Free up your day, don't have any other appointments. Different artists have different pace. Just enjoy the needle. Consider it your therapy.
