Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) IAI EL/M-2160 Missile Approach Warning System (MAWS)+Chaff/Flare Unit.

The EL/M-2160 is a radar-based airborne Missile Approach Warning System (MAWS) that reliably warns on an incoming missile attack, allowing timely activation of countermeasures to increase the platform’s survivability.

The EL/M-2160 is a field-proven system installed onboard Military Airlift, VIP Aircraft, Helicopters, Special Mission Aircraft and Commercial Aircraft. The countermeasures, such as chaff and flares (C/F), are ejected by an advanced C/F Dispenser for diverting the
threat missile from its track and protecting the platform against a hit by the missile.

The EL/M-2160 is a fully solid state Pulse Doppler Radar that provides accurate calculated time to impact and measurement of incoming missile’s direction. This data enables effective response for protecting the airborne platform.

This 1996 IAI footage shows the Sri Lanka Airforce aircraft being equipped with this system. On April 28, 1995 , the SLAF came to the tragic realisation of LTTE possesing MANPADS, by loosing the HS 748 CR-835 that was shot down while on approach to Palali, killing all 45 on board including a large number of SLAF officers. Within hours, HS 748 CR-834 met a similar fate with the loss on all onboard. Both this aircraft were shot down by SA-7 Grail missiles. By year-end two An-32B clines, a shaanxi Y-8 and an IA.58A Pucara had also been lost, claimimg another 134 lives. Then on January 22 an Mi-17 crashed in unknown circumstances, claimimg another 39 souls. These were the SLAF's and perhaps the country's darkest days.

The EL/M-2160 system proved effective against LTTE MANPADS yet some still fell victim to these missiles. Not almost every aircraft were equipped with this system by 2000 and some Mi-17s and Mi-24 were equipped with Russian made boxy EMU infra-red suppressors over the exhaust stubs, chaff/flare dispensers and IR Jammer on top of the fuselage which only had some immunity against SAMs.
