Introduction
The world is a complex place, and human knowledge continues to grow exponentially. As we evolved from simpler life forms over the millennia, we also evolved in our thoughts and knowledge. We slowly developed consciousness, self-awareness, reasoning, and the ability to use language. Religion, Philosophy, and Science, although seen as separate disciplines today, show our clear evolutionary development and progression.
Religion was our first unique human discipline. Humanity began practicing Religion long before the development of written languages. Self-awareness, imagination, fear of death, and the unknown formed the foundation for religious belief systems; the products of these evolved capabilities have been refined over thousands of years.
We then progressed to Philosophy, a discipline that has matured over the last few thousand years with the emergence of written languages. We explored and developed our abilities through pure logic and reason, building upon philosophical perspectives over time through written languages over generations. These new symbolic tools enabled us to develop and refine our philosophical thoughts and beliefs.
The emergence of scientific inquiry soon followed. The disciplines of science continue to draw on our collective observations and experiences, now verified by evidence, experimentation, and documentation. These new processes foster our further development of mathematical and scientific principles and methods, which we are learning to share and understand. Science has enabled rapid advances in our understanding, from technology to deeper insights.
Today, our evolutionary journey continues with the recent surge in the exponential growth of collective knowledge. This growth has increasingly led to specialized focuses within the sciences across numerous disciplines. No one can rationally claim to know everything anymore. Each new discipline, although it delves deeper into a specific subject, narrows the focus. As humanity collectively learns more, each person’s focus becomes increasingly specialized. We individually see and understand less of “The Big Picture.” While we are often in awe and wonder at all this new knowledge, we also feel overwhelmed by the expanding flow of information. We are increasingly challenged, both individually and collectively, to see the “Forest through the Trees.”
As a partial consequence, many follow ancient religions and belief systems to answer fundamental questions. Do you? Can you examine your core beliefs and recognize their origins? Did you accept belief systems, stories, and traditions because you verified they were proper based on objective, verifiable evidence, or did others influence you?

Beyond Religion, this conversation between a father and Daughter explores and explains philosophy and the social sciences from a broad, eclectic, evolutionary perspective. Reason, observation, and experience are employed to investigate the natural laws governing the universe.
