Reloading Tools: Testing the Lyman Brass Smith Case Trim Xpress

In this video I am using/testing the features of the Lyman Brass Smith Case Trim Xpress.

I mounted the unit to a wooden platform so I could leverage my t-slot mounts. This made a WORLD of difference. If this unit was not mounted to a bench, you're going to have to use one hand to keep it from moving and the other to push in the brass. I truly believe you'd be quite tired out doing a double push from each hand if you had any amount of brass to trim.

Swapping out the collets/bushings is a breeze and there is no guesswork to how tight to put the collar back on. The .001" adjustments are right on the money, with my only complaint on the adjustment wheel being too smooth and no knurling at all (although clearly marked with white slashes to note the .001" increments).

With the foot pedal and platform mount, this unit is a pleasure to trim brass. No guesswork and you can set the trimmer by trial and error (like you do a WFT), or measure the brass and adjust the settings (as the Frankford Arsenal trimmer suggests) to trim as much as you like/need.

The instructions state you should set the trimmer speed to the max setting (9) to avoid any brass chatter, but I found that 9 is too high and actually "grabs" the brass when you push it in. A setting of 7-8ish worked, for me, much better and did not "grab" the brass and was easier on the hand.

My only challenge now is to figure out how I want to do my chamfer and debur (I like the Lyman manual tool I did a video recently on).

All in all, a pretty cool trimming tool for the cost/performance.
