Heiltsuk First Nation stand against secretive DFO Herring Row Fishery in their territory

On Tuesday March 26 members and chiefs of the Heiltsuk First Nation held a protest and a vigil at the gates of Canfisco- Canadian Fish company to express their concerns and outrage over a DFO sneak opening for herring row seiners in the Spiller Channel area despite the work the Heiltsuk have been putting in to rebuild the herring stocks and despite their warnings to DFO that the stocks were still too fragile to sustain the distructive herring row fishery. Regardless of their concerns and their court ordered rights to protect and rebuild the herring stocks the seiners took out an estimated 450-650 tons of herring.
