Film set for 1990 multi-million-dollar Japanese box office hit still stands, for now | ABC News

An hour out of Hobart, at the far end of a paddock, is a house built for a Japanese feature film.

Called Tasmania Story, the Japanese-language film became a multi-million-dollar box office hit in Japan when it was released in 1990.

The film follows the travels of a young Japanese boy to Australia as he searches for his estranged father. He eventually tracks him to rural Tasmania, where his father has become obsessed with finding a thylacine.

Three decades on, location property owner Stuart Archer says the house will soon be demolished after extensive vandalism and years of disrepair.
