Faith groups condemn cut in universal credit

1100 religious leaders have signed a letter in protest at the government’s plans to end the £20 weekly uplift on universal credit. The rise was introduced during the pandemic but is to be ended this weekend, forcing the average claimant to live on £324.84 a month. The government’s decision and its impact was explored in a Religion Media Centre briefing, with guests Gareth McNab, head of External Affairs at Christians Against Poverty; Paul Morrison, Policy Adviser at the Joint Public Issues Team, which represents Methodist, URC and Baptist churches; Ed Davies, Policy Director, Centre for Social Justice; Anvar Sarygulov, senior research fellow at Bright Blue think tank; and Becca Stacey, policy and campaigns officer at the Zacchaeus Trust. Ruth Peacock and Andrew Brown hosted this briefing.
