In Silvi Marina, Abruzzo: talking oceans, seas, rivers and lakes
With this video I want to change tack a little bit with my channel. I still want to feature all that is beautiful about this extraordinary region we live in, but I also want to weave into the discussion a topic that is of utmost importance to me and one that I think should, now more than ever, be important to everyone: the environment.
Whilst I have tried to talk about environmental issues in my other videos especially where it pertains to particular projects we're working on, I now want to shift my focus wholly to this thematic area. And with good reason; this summer I was deeply upset if not totally traumatized by various climate change induced situations that were personally relevant to me happening across the world and sitting in my dear friend's apartment in Greece in near 55 degree heat whilst wildfires raged just to the north of us, while loving the time I spent with her and making the most of catching up on the last 5 years, I was faced with the idea that the future will be hotter than we can manage. You can not survive in 55 degree heat for very long and if you have to your life will become hell.
This has propelled me forward in my mission to get the word out about environmental issues and to help people to know that small lifestyle changes and small acts of consideration towards the environment make a big difference. We owe this to our children. The legacy that we leave can be profound and it should be profoundly positive. And I hope we achieve this before it's too late.
chapters:
0:00 Intro
1:00 Setting up the SUP boards
1:56 My life near the sea
3:09 Responsibility for climate catastrophe
3:45 Paul Hawken, Regeneration
4:15 Commercial fishing
4:25 Freshwater pollution
4:38 Plastic pollution
4:54 Microplastic and POPs
5:15 Global warming and sea surface temperature
5:30 Small Acts that make a difference
6:06 Slow down
6:55 Conclusion
In the video I discuss some of the issues relating to water pollution, over fishing and climate change and suggest some small ways that we can help improve the situation, but some other helpful ideas I missed include:
- Eating organic, which helps to reduce chemical runoff in our waterways.
- If you live in the Mediterranean and harvest your olives you should and can easily compost your olive mill waste. I've made a video about this here: https://youtu.be/0pfZKFLcJl0
- Boycott marine life theme parks who keep mammals unfairly in captivity and who often obtain these mammals, in particular dolphins, through drive hunts, where unwanted dolphins are cruelly butchered instead of being released back into the oceans. Dolphins and other large mammals play a significant role in fighting ocean stratification, which prevents essential phytoplankton from forming.
This is an incomplete list, but it's a start! If you want to read more about any of the issues I discuss in this video here are some resources:
