A powerful storm with torrential rain and hail has hit the Greek island region of Cyclades, causing severe flooding. Authorities have closed schools and banned all traffic except for emergency services.
On the island of Paros, heavy rains turned streets into raging torrents, carrying away cars and rubbish. Water flooded the island's main towns of Parikia and Naoussa, where popular tourist areas were underwater. Some residents were trapped in their homes by the flooding, and rescuers evacuated 13 people. Roads were damaged by landslides, and power lines were damaged in many areas.
On the island of Mykonos, the storm's effects were less destructive, but flooded streets and seaside cafes were damaged by torrential rain. Excavators cleared a path for the water to drain, and residents tried to minimize the damage. Strong winds and hail damaged roofs and some infrastructure. The storm also affected the islands of Syros, Symi, Kalymnos, Kos and some others.
