Chalk Paint vs IKEA Furniture

We often get asked if Chalk Paint will work on IKEA furniture. The answer is absolutely yes!

In general, Chalk Paint™ covers IKEA finishes well and bonds nicely. Most of their finishes do not require any extra steps - no sanding or priming. That said, there are a couple of extremely high-gloss IKEA furniture finishes that need a little extra attention. A little sanding prior to applying your paint will ensure your success. When sanding, you’re not looking to remove the finish, you’re just looking to scuff the surface and give the paint a little something to grab to. In this video, I’m using a 220 grit sanding sponge on one side to rough up the finish and make it paint ready. On the other side of the desk top I didn't do any sanding. We also try testing brushing the paint on vs rolling to see if it makes a difference in how the paint adheres. Both sides accepted paint well and there was no peeling or cracking afterward.

Thanks for watching! Also, we put this board in an area where students and customers placed purses, keys, phones, etc. Over time all of the test patches held up the same - no peeling, cracking or chipping - just some minor scuffs in the wax that were easily buffed out.
