Charcoal Burners – The Last of Their Kind In Germany

Do you know what charcoal burners do? They use handicraft techniques to carbonate wood. Charcoal, for example, is needed for the smelting of ore and the processing of iron. Without charcoal burners we wouldn’t have knives nor machines, and the whole industrial revolution could not have taken place. Imagine how different the world would look today.

Charcoal burning used to be such an important skill that it was even declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. After all, making charcoal from wood is considered one of the oldest craft techniques known to mankind. Today, however, there are only a few people in Europe who still master this craft.

Euromaxx reporter Hendrik Welling traveled to the Harz Mountains in northern Germany, to visit one of the last families of charcoal burners, the Feldmers. Hendrik lended a hand while they showed him how to make charcoal
