Celebrating Julian Bond
Advancing the Teaching of Civil Rights History
To honor Mr. Bond's achievements and to advance the teaching and interpreting of civil rights studies, the University of Virginia is seeking funds to cre- ate the Julian Bond Professorship in Civil Rights and Social Justice. This chair will make it possible to attract outstanding teachers and scholars who can build on Mr. Bond's achievements and make the University a leading center of thought on the strug- gle for civil rights and its continuing impact.
The professorship will create a powerful synergy among the many faculty and students on Grounds who are working to shed new light on the civil rights movement and the African-American experi- ence. Their efforts encompass a wide diversity of disciplines, ranging from law and politics to reli- gious studies and architecture. The chairholder will also draw on the scholarly resources of the Carter G. Woodson Institute for African American and African Studies, a productive and highly respected center of teaching and research on the African diaspora, in this country and around the world.
